I've worked HL2 and games with my controller heaps of times, so I know what info to give you! Get a 360 wired xbox controller, make sure it has a usb that'll fit with your computer's usb port, plug the controller in, then start up say, Episode 2, go into options, when options open up, got to "mouse" and you'll see the option to "enable gamepad
Location of the saves is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2\save. Just cut and paste the last save file (sort by date/time) - the one that got corrupted and paste it somewhere for back up (just in case) and start the game. The last save before it got corrupted and continue from there.
